When children and families enter the Dental Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s (CHoR’s) Brook Road Campus, they are immediately greeted by the receptionist peering out of the ‘submarine porthole’ window. The child-friendly Dental Clinic is specifically designed to make children feel as comfortable and safe as possible from the moment they enter, until to the moment they leave.
“Our dental team works hard to calm children by explaining procedures in terms that they can understand,” said Donna Palmer, RN, dental services clinical coordinator on the Brook Road Campus. “Our little patients enjoy holding the ‘tooth mirror’ and learning the proper way to clean their teeth. Many of our patients have formed special bonds with the staff, and they of course love getting a prize after their visit,” Donna said.
From the child-sized equipment, to a team of specialists trained to treat and care for kids, CHoR’s Dental Clinic is specifically designed to meet the needs of children. Patients can relax and watch their favorite cartoon or sit back and listen to their favorite music during their appointment. CHoR’s Brook Road Campus Dental Clinic provides a full range of services from regular check-ups to specialized dental care for children with special needs.
“My 4-year-old son has sensory challenges and feeding issues,” said Heather, a dental patient’s mom. “These obstacles made us anxious for his first dental visit but the staff did such a great job putting him at ease. They took their time making sure he was comfortable, they boosted his confidence, and enabled him to feel safe which led to a positive experience for both me and my son,” said Heather.
