CHoR’s NICU Earns Beacon Award for Excellence

Published by , on Apr 18, 2014

beaconChildren’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s (CHoR) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the first NICU in Virginia to receive the Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The Beacon Award recognizes individual units that distinguish themselves by improving every facet of patient care. As one of only five NICUs in the country to receive this honor, CHoR is proud to be among nationally-recognized providers like Children’s Hospital Boston and Miami Children’s Hospital. CHoR’s NICU achieved the highest designation possible, gold-level status.

“It is an honor that our unit received this acknowledgement,” said Sharon Cone, PhD, nurse manager of CHoR’s NICU. “CHoR’s NICU staff is committed to excellence, always going above and beyond to ensure that the needs of all patients, families and fellow teammates are met. This award is a testament to their incredible dedication and relentless teamwork.”

For patients and their families in Central Virginia, the award means exceptional comprehensive and compassionate care is available in their community.

The NICU cares for premature and critically ill newborns as well as full term infants who experience a wide range of medical or surgical problems. CHoR’s 40-bed unit is staffed by more than 100 highly specialized and certified registered nurses and nurse practitioners. This collaboration is supported in great part by a variety of specialists including neonatologists, pediatric subspecialists and therapists who work together as a holistic team.

“The diversity of the diagnoses we see is tremendous,” said Cone. “Parents from all over the region bring their babies here because they know they will be well cared for. We are the only facility in the area to administer ECMO, a therapy that sustains life for a period of time in conditions where the heart or lungs need a time of rest, and we have sought after experience in a variety of highly specialized areas.”

The NICU is VCU Medical Center’s largest critical-care service and the oldest and largest unit of its kind in Central Virginia. The unit is also the only single-family room NICU in Central Virginia. The state-of-the-art NICU cares for hundreds of infants each year, the highest volume in the region.

“I believe this award is only the beginning for CHoR’s NICU,” said Cone. “This is a stepping stone to even greater success as we continually work towards or goal of providing the best possible care for our patients.”
