CHoR’s is home to the only Level 1 PICU in Central Virginia, that’s a fancy way of saying it provides the most advanced lifesaving technologies and treatments to care for critically ill and injured children, including 24/7 access to pediatric specialists. The dedicated PICU team cares for everything from respiratory complications to monitoring after an organ transplant. Take the virtual tour to see what the PICU is like from a child’s point of view. The PICU provides a healing environment for some of CHoR’s most critically ill patients. All of the unit’s rooms are private, with sleeper chairs for parents to remain at the bedside as well as access to CHoR’s Ronald McDonald Rooms, just down the hall.“It is just as important for us to care for the families as it is the children. We help them support their child’s healing” said Elizabeth Smith, RN, BSN, MBA, nurse manager for CHoR’s PICU, Pediatric Progressive Care Unit and Child Life Services. “Parents consistently tell me how encouraged and included they feel in their child’s care, which is a testament to our dedication to providing family-centered care.”The motivated PICU staff goes above and beyond, working hard to find new ways to improve care. The team delivers dedicated, compassionate care to help patients thrive and to support parents during an often difficult time.“A little girl shared stories with me about her adventures with her cousin and best friend, who was in the PICU.  I encouraged her to remember those fun memories when she needed comfort,” said Smith. “This little girl looked to me for support in a difficult and confusing time. As a manager, it was a rare event for me, but then I remember our nurses do this on a daily basis, and I’m in awe.”Take a virtual video tour of the PICU to learn about its team and services.
