http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqOqO3a1W5QWalking into the pediatric emergency room at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) is like entering a vibrant rainforest, a far contrast from adult hospital environments. Children and their families are greeted in CHoR’s rainforest-themed ER by frogs, toucans, monkeys…and a compassionate pediatric medical team.As part of VCU Medical Center, the region’s only designated level 1 trauma center, CHoR’s pediatric emergency room (ER) provides the highest level of emergency care in the region including 24-hour access to pediatric specialists—from dentists and anesthesiologists to trauma surgeons.“Children are not just small adults,” said Chris Woleben, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and associate dean of student affairs for the VCU School of Medicine. “Children have a unique physiology requiring different treatments, even for a child patient with the same medical condition as an adult. Seeking care at an emergency room dedicated to children guarantees your child will receive optimal, age appropriate care to best meet their needs.”CHoR’s pediatric specialists provide 24/7 care to Central Virginia’s children in a child-focused environment. With unique features like child-sized equipment, pediatric IV pumps and a high nurse to patient ratio, there’s a reason kids from across the region are referred to CHoR’s ER.“When a child came to the pediatric ER with a gastrointestinal bleed, our team treated him through the most challenging moments and monitored him through his recovery,” said Dr. Woleben. “His mother came back weeks later to say thank you to the team. I can’t imagine doing anything more rewarding than caring for children and helping their families. Each day I come to work, I have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a child or family member’s life.”Come along for a virtual video tour of the facility and see why having a pediatric ER is so important.
